Overview

Tehran Province is the most populous and economically significant province in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Situated in the north-central part of the country, it serves as the political, cultural, and industrial beating heart of the nation. The province is anchored by the sprawling metropolis of Tehran, which also serves as the national capital, but its borders encompass a highly diverse landscape ranging from the arid southern plains to the snow-capped peaks of the Alborz mountain range in the north.

The province is a remarkable study in contrasts. Within its borders, one can find the high-altitude ski resorts of Shemiranat, the ancient, archaeologically rich ruins of Ray, and the bustling high-tech and industrial corridors that drive nearly a third of Iran's national economy. It acts as a magnet for internal migration, drawing millions from across the country seeking education, employment, and access to the nation's most advanced healthcare and infrastructure.

Historically serving as a minor village while neighboring Ray held regional prominence, Tehran's fortunes changed dramatically in the late 18th century when the Qajar dynasty made it their capital. Today, Tehran Province represents modern Iran in all its complexity—a hub of art, cinema, and university life, as well as the center of the country's complex political landscape.
