Flood Situation Report — Pala Region, Kottayam District, Kerala
August 1, 2026

Heavy southwest monsoon rains have affected large parts of Kerala. The India
Meteorological Department has issued Orange Alerts for several districts,
including Kottayam, due to the risk of very heavy rainfall, flash floods,
waterlogging, and landslides. The Pala region, along the Meenachil River,
remains one of the most flood-prone areas in central Kerala.

• Ramapuram
• Low-lying areas of Meenachil Taluk

Weather conditions. Persistent moderate to heavy rainfall from July 31
into August 1. IMD warned that isolated locations could receive 70–200 mm of
rainfall within 24 hours, with strong 40–50 km/h winds. 24-hour rainfall
recorded across the district: 70–200 mm (very-heavy-rainfall alert).
Meenachil River level as of 08:00 IST: 4.35 m and rising (alert
threshold 5.0 m).

Pala Town. Continuous rainfall through the day; rising Meenachil water
levels; waterlogging on low-lying roads; slower traffic; overflowing drains;
temporary commercial disruption. Residents near the riverbanks remain on
alert.

Lalam & Moonnani. Flooding of low-lying residential properties, overflow
of drainage channels, water entering agricultural fields, difficult travel on
interior roads.

Kollappally. Near the Lalam River just above the Meenachil basin —
overflowing drains, localised flooding, hazardous driving conditions.

Kadanad. Village roads affected; water accumulated in paddy fields; minor
stream overflows in vulnerable spots; farmers monitoring for crop damage.

Agricultural impact. Rubber, pepper, banana, tapioca, vegetable, and
paddy — standing water raising concerns about losses if rainfall persists.

Transport. Waterlogged roads; reduced visibility; fallen branches in
isolated locations. Motorists advised to avoid flooded stretches on roads
connecting Pala with Kottayam, Thodupuzha, and Erattupetta.

• Stay away from swollen rivers, streams, and flooded bridges.
• Never drive through flowing floodwaters.
• Keep emergency medicines, drinking water, and charged phones ready.
• Move valuables to higher floors if flooding becomes imminent.
• Follow instructions issued by district authorities.

Historical context. The Pala region experienced major floods in 2018,
2020, and 2021, when the Meenachil River overflowed and inundated Pala,
Kadanad, Kollappally, and neighbouring communities. Residents are especially
vigilant during prolonged heavy rainfall.
