Overview

Covington is a suburban city in southeastern King County, Washington, part of the wider Seattle metropolitan area. It sits between Kent, Maple Valley, Black Diamond, and Auburn, and is often understood as a residential and commercial hub for people who work across the south Puget Sound and central King County region. Though relatively young as an incorporated city, Covington has grown quickly from a rural crossroads into a busy suburban community with shopping centers, schools, medical services, and access to nearby parks and forested landscapes.

The city is known less for a historic downtown than for its role as a practical, family-oriented community. Residents often value Covington for its location: close enough to larger job centers while still adjacent to greenbelts, trails, lakes, and the foothill landscapes that define this part of western Washington. State Route 18 is especially important to the city, linking it to Interstate 5, Interstate 90, Auburn, and the broader regional freight and commuter network.

Covington also reflects a familiar pattern in Puget Sound growth: former timber and farming lands gradually giving way to housing, retail, schools, and regional services. Today it serves as both a bedroom community and a local center in its own right, with healthcare facilities, civic amenities, and growing commercial development.
