History

Before Euro-American settlement, the broader Green River and White River region was home to Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest, including Coast Salish communities. As in much of present-day King County, Native peoples used local forests, rivers, and wetlands for travel, fishing, hunting, and gathering. Specific tribal use of the land that is now Covington is part of the larger Indigenous history of the region, though detailed city-specific documentation is not always easy to find in summary sources.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area that became Covington was shaped by logging, small-scale agriculture, and rural settlement. Forest resources were central to the economy across this part of Washington, and roads gradually improved connections between settlements. Covington's name is commonly linked to a local early settler or landowner, though brief public summaries vary in detail on the exact naming history.

For much of the 20th century, Covington remained an unincorporated community in King County. Its growth accelerated after World War II as the Seattle-Tacoma region expanded outward. Better roads, increasing automobile ownership, and suburban demand brought more homes, schools, and local businesses to the area. By the late 20th century, residents sought more local control over planning, services, and land use.

Covington incorporated as a city in 1997. Since incorporation, it has focused on managing rapid suburban growth, expanding city services, improving transportation corridors, and building a stronger civic identity. Development has included retail centres, medical facilities, and residential neighborhoods, while public debate has often centered on traffic, housing, environmental protection, and maintaining quality of life amid regional growth pressures.
