Because Reston is not an incorporated city or town, it does not have a mayor or a traditional city council. Instead, local governance operates on two distinct tracks.
Civically, Reston is governed by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. It falls primarily within the Hunter Mill District. The county provides essential municipal services, including police, fire, public schools, and road maintenance.
At the community level, the **Reston Association (RA)** plays a massive role. The RA is one of the largest homeowners' associations in the United States. It is responsible for maintaining the community's extensive network of 55+ miles of trails, 15 community pools, 50+ tennis and pickleball courts, and numerous lakes and parks. The RA also enforces architectural design covenants to maintain the community's aesthetic standards. A Board of Directors, elected by the residents, oversees the organization.
