Religion

Charlottesville is home to a diverse array of religious and spiritual communities. Historic Christian churches, such as Christ Episcopal Church and First Baptist Church (one of the oldest Black congregations in the city), have deep roots in the community. The city also features diverse spiritual representation including the **Islamic Society of Central Virginia**, which serves the local Muslim community, and **Congregation Beth Israel**, the oldest functioning synagogue building in Virginia. A variety of Buddhist centers, Hindu communities, and non-denominational spiritual groups reflect the diverse, international population drawn by the university.
