The topography of Annandale consists primarily of rolling hills typical of the Virginia Piedmont region. Elevations generally range from 200 to 400 feet above sea level.
The landscape features gentle undulating slopes that drop down into the minor valleys formed by the local creek systems. Accotink Creek and Holmes Run have carved modest ravines and feature surrounding flood plains that are largely protected from development by the Fairfax County Park Authority. There are no major mountains, deep canyons, or coastal areas within Annandale, though its hilly terrain dictates the winding, non-grid layout of many of its residential neighborhoods.
