Overview

Medford is the largest city in southern Oregon and the commercial center of the Rogue Valley. It sits along Interstate 5 between the Cascade Range and the Siskiyou Mountains, making it an important hub for trade, healthcare, travel, and regional services. Although Portland and the Willamette Valley dominate many perceptions of Oregon, Medford plays a comparable role for a broad swath of the state's south, serving nearby communities in Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, and surrounding counties.

The city is widely known for its connection to orchards, pears, wine country, and access to outdoor recreation. It lies within reach of Crater Lake National Park, the Rogue River, Ashland's Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and many hiking, rafting, and fishing destinations. Medford is also home to Rogue Valley International–Medford Airport, one of the most important transportation facilities in southern Oregon.

Historically, Medford grew as a railroad town and agricultural shipping point. Over time it diversified into healthcare, retail, education, logistics, and professional services. The city today blends suburban development with a working regional economy, and it remains closely tied to agriculture even as vineyards, tourism, and medical services have become more prominent.

A recurring theme in Medford's identity is its role as a practical center rather than a symbolic one: people come here to work, study, receive medical care, shop, travel, and access the wider Rogue Valley. That regional function helps explain both its growth and its importance within Oregon.
