Geography

Eugene is located in western Oregon at the southern end of the **Willamette Valley**, one of the most fertile and populous regions in the Pacific Northwest. The city lies primarily along the **Willamette River**, near the confluence of the **McKenzie River** farther downstream in the metropolitan area. Its setting places it between the Oregon Coast Range to the west and the Cascade Range to the east.

The surrounding landscape includes river terraces, low hills, alluvial soils, and remnants of historic valley prairie and oak savanna ecosystems. Forested foothills rise on the southern edge of the city, while flatter urbanized land spreads across the valley floor. Eugene's park system and natural areas are closely tied to these river and hill environments.

Geologically, the area reflects long-term river deposition in the Willamette Basin combined with uplifted hills and nearby volcanic influence from the Cascades. Soils in the broader region have supported agriculture for generations, while timber resources in Lane County historically fed the local economy.

Eugene has a **Mediterranean-type climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters**, typical of much of western Oregon. The city is greener and wetter than inland U.S. cities at similar latitude, though it is drier than the immediate coast. Natural resources in the region include timber, water, fertile agricultural land, and recreation landscapes rather than major mineral extraction within the city itself.
