Because it straddles the Portage Escarpment, Cleveland Heights is characterized by hilly, uneven terrain, distinguishing it from the flatter lake plains of downtown Cleveland. Elevations range from around 900 feet on the western border to over 1,000 feet in the eastern sections.
The topography is heavily featured with ravines and small valleys carved by the Doan Brook watershed. The western edge of the city features steep inclines—notably Cedar Hill, Mayfield Road, and Fairmount Boulevard—which commuters travel to descend into Cleveland proper. There are no coastal areas or major flood plains within the city limits, though local parks preserve the marshy, riparian zones around the Shaker Lakes and Doan Brook.
