## Environment

New York State includes Atlantic coast, major river systems, large lakes, mountains, forests, farmland, and dense urban landscapes. Its environmental conditions vary widely by region.

### Natural setting - **Major water bodies:** Atlantic Ocean shoreline, Hudson River, Mohawk River, Finger Lakes, Great Lakes shorelines, Lake Champlain, and many reservoirs and streams. - **Major mountain regions:** Adirondacks and Catskills. - **Protected lands:** extensive state parks, forest preserves, wildlife areas, and local conservation lands.

### Air quality - Air quality ranges from relatively clean mountain and rural areas to more challenged urban and transportation corridors. - Ozone and fine-particle pollution can affect parts of downstate and major metro areas, especially during summer heat events. - Official monitoring is available through state and federal agencies.

### Water quality - Water quality differs by watershed and local infrastructure. - New York City is widely known for a large protected watershed system. - Some communities have dealt with aging pipes, stormwater overflows, harmful algal blooms, or emerging contaminants. - Beach, lake, and drinking-water advisories are issued by health and environmental authorities when necessary.

### Protected areas and biodiversity Notable protected landscapes include: - **Adirondack Park** - **Catskill Park** - **Niagara Falls State Park** - **Letchworth State Park** - **Allegany State Park** - **Fire Island National Seashore** - Many state forests, wildlife management areas, and marine/coastal habitats

### Sustainability and climate issues - New York has adopted major climate and clean-energy policies through state law and planning processes. - Key issues include: - Decarbonizing buildings and transport - Coastal resilience and sea-level rise - Flood mitigation - Grid modernization - Urban heat - Agricultural sustainability - Waste reduction and recycling

### Recycling and waste - Recycling systems are managed locally, but statewide policies influence bottle deposits, electronics disposal, and waste reduction. - Organics collection and composting are expanding in some communities.

### Environmental strengths - Exceptional landscape diversity - Large protected public lands - Significant freshwater resources - Strong state-level environmental regulation compared with many jurisdictions

### Ongoing challenges - Aging water and sewer infrastructure - Flooding and storm vulnerability - Habitat fragmentation in developed areas - Legacy industrial pollution in some corridors - Balancing housing, energy, and conservation goals
