Historically, the land comprising modern Lanham was heavily utilized for agriculture, particularly tobacco farming, dairy operations, and orchards, which were the backbone of the Prince George's County economy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Today, Lanham is entirely suburbanized. There is no large-scale commercial agriculture, livestock production, or commercial forestry operating within the community limits. Food production is limited to community gardens and small-scale residential gardening.
