Before European settlement, the land that is now Milton was inhabited by the Cherokee Nation. By the 1830s, following the Georgia Land Lotteries and the tragic forced removal of indigenous peoples known as the Trail of Tears, white settlers established agricultural communities in the area.
In 1857, the area was formally organized as Milton County, named after John Milton, a Revolutionary War hero and Georgia's first Secretary of State. Milton County remained a primarily agricultural region for decades. However, during the Great Depression, the county faced severe financial ruin. In 1932, to avoid bankruptcy, Milton County merged with the much wealthier Fulton County to the south.
For most of the 20th century, the area remained unincorporated northern Fulton County, retaining a quiet, agrarian lifestyle. As the Atlanta suburbs rapidly expanded northward in the 1990s and early 2000s, local residents grew concerned about creeping high-density development and the potential loss of their community's rural character.
In response, residents organized a cityhood movement. On July 18, 2006, voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum to incorporate, and the City of Milton officially came into existence on December 1, 2006. Since then, the city's history has been defined by its strategic land-use planning and a unified local effort to protect its equestrian roots.
