Unlike most modern suburbs, agriculture—specifically equestrian activity—is a defining characteristic of Milton. The city is often referred to as the horse capital of Georgia.
Large portions of the city's acreage are dedicated to pastures, horse farms, boarding facilities, and riding arenas. While large-scale commercial food crop production is minimal, there is a strong culture of hobby farming, "gentleman's farms," and organic gardening. The preservation of agricultural land is actively incentivized by the city government to maintain Milton's rural canopy and pastoral aesthetics.
