Historically, San Jose was the heart of the "Valley of Heart's Delight," one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world, famed for its sprawling orchards of prunes, apricots, and peaches.
Today, large-scale agriculture within the city limits has been almost entirely replaced by urban and suburban development. However, Santa Clara County as a whole still maintains an agricultural sector on its fringes, particularly in the southern portions of the county near Morgan Hill and Gilroy, focusing on mushrooms, nursery crops, bell peppers, and vineyards. Urban agriculture and community gardens have also seen a resurgence within San Jose's neighborhoods.
