Compton lies within the Los Angeles Basin, featuring an extremely flat topography with an average elevation of just 69 feet (21 meters) above sea level. There are no hills, mountains, or significant natural valleys within the city limits. The terrain is part of a historic flood plain of the Los Angeles River, which is why the soil was originally so fertile for agriculture before the region was paved and urbanized.
