Rivers, lakes & waterways

Water is the defining geographical feature of the Netherlands. Nearly a third of the country sits below sea level, protected by a sophisticated network of dikes, dunes, and storm surge barriers (the Delta Works).

* **Major Rivers:** The Rhine (Rijn), Meuse (Maas), and Scheldt (Schelde) all flow through the Netherlands, creating a massive, economically vital delta before emptying into the North Sea. * **Lakes & Inland Waters:** The **IJsselmeer** and **Markermeer** are vast, shallow artificial lakes created by damming off the Zuiderzee (an inlet of the North Sea) in the 20th century to prevent flooding and create arable land (*polders*). * **Canals (*Grachten*):** Found in almost every historic city, they historically served for transport, defense, and water management. * **Coastline:** The country has a long North Sea coastline with expansive, sandy beaches backed by protective dune systems.
