Population

According to the 2021 Nepal Census, Kathmandu District has a population of approximately 2.01 million, with Kathmandu Metropolitan City housing roughly 845,000 residents. However, due to large floating populations of students, migrant workers, and daily commuters from neighboring districts, the functional population of the city on any given day is significantly higher.

The demographic makeup of Kathmandu is highly diverse, reflecting its status as the national capital and a hub for internal migration. While the indigenous Newars hold a significant cultural presence and represent a large portion of the population, the city is a melting pot of ethnic groups including Chhetri, Bahun (Brahmin), Tamang, Magar, and Gurung communities.

Religion plays a central role in the daily life of the population, with Hinduism being the dominant faith, closely intertwined with Buddhism. This religious syncretism is a hallmark of Kathmandu's culture. Nepali is the lingua franca and official language, though Nepal Bhasa (the traditional Newar language) is widely spoken, along with English, which is highly prevalent in business, education, and tourism sectors.
