Historically a bustling inland waterway for cargo and passenger boats, the Meenachil River's role in transportation has evolved. Today, navigation is mostly restricted to its wider, deeper lower reaches near Kumarakom, where traditional wooden canoes, passenger ferries, and large tourist houseboats operate.
The basin itself is well-connected by land infrastructure. The Main Eastern Highway (SH-08) runs parallel to significant stretches of the river. Numerous bridges cross the river, integrating the regional road network. Kottayam serves as the major railhead (Southern Railway) for the basin. The nearest major airport is Cochin International Airport (COK), located about 75-90 km away from the major towns along the river.
