* **Meenachil River Valley Project**: A long-discussed, partially implemented multi-purpose project aimed at flood control, irrigation, and drinking water supply by constructing reservoirs and check dams. * **Flood Mitigation Infrastructure**: Following the devastating 2018 Kerala floods, the state government has planned improved retaining walls, dredging operations, and early warning systems along the river. * **Eco-Tourism Expansion**: Efforts are underway to develop sustainable eco-tourism along the upper reaches of the river (near Vagamon and Teekoy) while regulating houseboat traffic in the lower reaches (Kumarakom). * **Urban Waterfront Development**: Kottayam municipality has proposed periodic plans to beautify the riverbanks, prevent encroachment, and create public walkways.
