The Meenachil River ecosystem is a mix of pristine high-altitude streams and heavily utilized urban waterways.
* **Origins**: The river originates in the ecologically fragile Western Ghats (specifically the Vagamon/Peerumedu hills), an area recognized for its high biodiversity. * **Water Quality**: In the upper reaches, the water is relatively clean. However, as it flows through urban centers like Erattupetta, Pala, and Kottayam, it faces significant pollution from untreated sewage, hospital waste, and agricultural runoff (especially from rubber plantations). * **Sand Mining**: Illegal and excessive sand mining has severely degraded the riverbed, leading to bank collapse, loss of aquatic life, and lowering of the local water table. * **Flora and Fauna**: The river basin is home to diverse riparian vegetation.
