Water is central to Kottayam's geography and identity. The **Meenachil River**, made globally famous by Arundhati Roy's novel *The God of Small Things*, meanders directly through the district. To the west lies **Vembanad Lake**, the longest lake in India and the largest in Kerala, forming the sprawling backwater network that sustains the region's ecosystem, fishing industry, and tourism.
