Kerala features a tropical monsoon climate characterized by heavy rainfall and high humidity year-round. It is classified primarily as a Tropical Monsoon climate (Köppen *Am*) with some areas exhibiting a Tropical Savanna climate (*Aw*). The state's weather is predominantly influenced by two seasonal monsoons.
The Southwest Monsoon typically arrives in early June and lasts through September, bringing torrential downpours. The Northeast Monsoon (retreating monsoon) occurs in October and November, accompanied by frequent thunderstorms. Average daytime temperatures range from 28°C to 32°C (82°F–90°F) in the plains, while the hill stations in the Western Ghats can experience much cooler temperatures, dropping below 10°C (50°F) in winter. The best time to visit is generally between September and March, when the weather is relatively cooler and less rainy. The state is vulnerable to flooding and landslides during intense monsoon seasons, as seen during the historic 2018 floods.
