Religion

Capital: Thiruvananthapuram

Kerala is distinguished by its history of religious harmony and syncretism. Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity have co-existed here for centuries.

* **Hinduism:** The majority religion. Important sites include the **Sabarimala Temple** (one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world), the **Padmanabhaswamy Temple** in Trivandrum, and the **Guruvayur Temple**. * **Islam:** Muslims form a significant demographic, primarily concentrated in the northern Malabar region. The **Cheraman Juma Mosque** in Kodungallur is believed to be the first mosque built in India (dating back to the 7th century). * **Christianity:** Syrian Christians trace their origins to the arrival of St. Thomas the Apostle in 52 AD. The state is home to stunning colonial-era and traditional churches, such as the **Malayattoor Church**. * **Judaism:** Kochi has a small but historically rich Jewish community, centered around the **Paradesi Synagogue** (built in 1568).
