Infrastructure

Capital: Thiruvananthapuram

Infrastructure in Kerala is characterized by near-universal access to basic utilities. Electricity is primarily generated by hydroelectric projects and managed by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). Piped water and sanitation are overseen by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) and local municipal bodies, with widespread coverage even in rural areas.

Kerala is a pioneer in digital infrastructure. It was the first Indian state to declare internet access a basic human right. This is supported by the Kerala Fiber Optic Network (K-FON) project, which aims to provide high-speed broadband to all households and government offices. Cellular networks (4G/5G) offer excellent coverage across the state, save for the most remote forest areas.
