Economy

Capital: Thiruvananthapuram

Kerala's economy is distinctively driven by the services sector, which accounts for over 60% of its Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). Despite trailing heavily industrialized states in manufacturing output, Kerala consistently ranks at the top in India for the Human Development Index (HDI). This unique trajectory—achieving first-world health and education standards on a developing-world income—is termed the "Kerala Model."

A cornerstone of the economy is remittances from the Gulf states, which historically accounted for a significant percentage of the state's GDP and fueled local consumption, banking, and real estate. However, the state government is increasingly pushing for a transition towards a knowledge economy. Tourism, IT services, healthcare, and agriculture remain critical pillars, though unemployment among educated youth remains a persistent challenge.
