Agriculture

The history of Kerala's monuments is intrinsically tied to agriculture—specifically the cultivation of spices like black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves. It was the global demand for these agricultural products that brought Roman, Arab, Chinese, and European fleets to Kerala's shores, prompting the construction of the forts, ports, and custom houses that stand today. Currently, many inland heritage sites are surrounded by active coconut plantations, rubber estates, and spice gardens, which continue to form the backbone of Kerala's agrarian economy.
