Thanks to the influx of Gulf remittances over the past few decades, Kerala has witnessed a boom in large, modern houses blending traditional Kerala architectural elements (like sloping terracotta roofs for monsoon protection) with contemporary amenities. This has driven land prices up significantly, making real estate some of the most expensive in India relative to local wages.
To address affordability, the state government launched the LIFE (Livelihood Inclusion and Financial Empowerment) Mission, a massive public housing scheme aimed at providing modern, affordable housing for landless and homeless residents across the state.
