Khuzestan experiences a mix of a hot desert climate (Köppen BWh) in the plains and a semi-arid climate (BSh) in the foothills and mountains. The province is renowned for its extreme summer heat. Between May and September, daytime temperatures regularly exceed 45°C (113°F) and can surpass 50°C (122°F) in cities like Ahvaz, making it one of the hottest populated places on Earth.
Winters, however, are brief, mild, and highly pleasant, with daytime temperatures averaging around 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F). This makes late autumn, winter, and early spring the ideal times to visit.
Rainfall is generally sparse and concentrated between November and April, with the mountainous regions receiving significantly more precipitation (sometimes as snow) than the plains. In recent decades, the province has been increasingly plagued by severe dust and sandstorms (known locally as * ریزگرد* or *rizgard*), exacerbated by the drying of regional wetlands and climate change.
