Khuzestan is the engine of the Iranian economy, primarily due to its staggering hydrocarbon resources. The province produces the vast majority of Iran's crude oil and natural gas, contributing heavily to the national GDP. The oil sector supports a massive downstream industry, including refineries and petrochemical plants.
Beyond energy, Khuzestan boasts a robust agricultural sector. Thanks to its major rivers and extensive irrigation networks, it is Iran's leading producer of wheat and a major center for sugarcane cultivation. The Arvand Free Zone, covering parts of Abadan and Khorramshahr, was established to stimulate trade, foreign investment, and industrial development by offering tax exemptions and simplified customs procedures.
Despite its macro-economic output, the province faces micro-economic challenges. The cost of living in industrial cities like Ahvaz is relatively high, and there is an ongoing need for economic diversification to provide sustainable employment outside the highly automated energy sectors.
