Infrastructure

India’s infrastructure base is large and rapidly developing, but availability and quality differ substantially by state, district, and neighborhood.

## Electricity - India has a vast national and regional power grid. - Grid connectivity has expanded greatly in recent decades. - Power generation comes from coal, hydro, gas, nuclear, solar, wind, and other sources. - Reliability has improved in many places, though outages still occur in some regions.

## Water supply - Urban water systems range from advanced municipal networks to intermittent supply models. - Rural water access has improved through major public programs, but groundwater dependence remains high in many areas. - Water stress is a serious issue in several states due to over-extraction, seasonal rainfall variability, pollution, and rapid urban growth.

## Sewer and sanitation - Sewerage coverage is stronger in large cities than in smaller towns and many rural areas. - Sanitation access has improved significantly through national campaigns, though wastewater treatment capacity remains uneven. - Drainage and stormwater systems are often under pressure during monsoon seasons.

## Internet and broadband - India has one of the world’s largest internet user bases. - Mobile broadband is the primary internet access mode for many households. - Fiber broadband has expanded in cities and towns, but speed and reliability vary. - Digital public services, online payments, and smartphone-based commerce are highly developed by global standards.

## Cellular networks - 4G coverage is widespread and 5G rollout is underway in major and mid-sized markets. - Urban connectivity is generally stronger than in remote mountain, forest, or border areas.

## Public digital infrastructure India is notable for large-scale digital systems used in identity, payments, and service delivery, including **Aadhaar**, **UPI**, and various e-governance platforms. These have become an important part of the country’s infrastructure environment, alongside physical utilities.
