The Kerala library movement (Kerala Granthasala Sangham) was pioneered by P.N. Panicker, widely known as the Father of the Library Movement in Kerala. Founded in 1945 with an initial network of just 47 rural libraries, the organization sparked a state-wide social and educational revolution. These local libraries acted as the nerve centers for adult education, cultural exchange, and political discourse. This robust historical infrastructure directly facilitated Kerala's landmark achievement in 1990, when it was recognized as India's first fully literate state. Today, June 19 is celebrated as Reading Day (Vayanadinam) across Kerala to honor this legacy.
