Kakkanad's history is deeply intertwined with the broader cultural heritage of the Ernakulam region. Historically, the area was dominated by agricultural lands, coconut groves, and small hamlets. It is closely associated with the ancient Thrikkakara Temple, located just a few kilometers away, which is celebrated as the focal point of the Onam festival—the most significant cultural event in Kerala, tracing its mythology to King Mahabali and Lord Vamana.
For much of the 20th century, Kakkanad remained a sleepy suburban village. Its transformation began in the late 1980s and 1990s when the Kerala government chose it as the site for the Ernakulam District Collectorate (Civil Station), moving the administrative headquarters away from the congested city center of Ernakulam.
The true turning point occurred in 2004 with the establishment of InfoPark. This state-sponsored technology park triggered an economic and real estate boom. In the following years, the announcement and subsequent development of SmartCity Kochi—an IT township built in partnership with Dubai Holding—further cemented Kakkanad's status as a premier destination for technology and commerce. Today, its modern history is one of continuous growth, multicultural immigration driven by the tech sector, and expanding infrastructure.
