The region around present-day Bengaluru has been inhabited for many centuries, and the wider area formed part of the historical landscapes of southern India long before the rise of the modern city. The area was shaped by successive South Indian polities, including the Western Gangas, Cholas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara Empire. Kannada-speaking culture has deep roots in the region, and nearby inscriptions attest to long-standing settlement and political organization.
The founding of the modern city is commonly associated with Kempe Gowda I, a local chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire, who is traditionally said to have established Bengaluru in 1537. He built a mud fort and organized the settlement with markets, water tanks, and neighborhood divisions. Kempe Gowda remains a foundational figure in the city’s historical memory.
After the decline of Vijayanagara, Bengaluru passed through multiple political hands. In the eighteenth century it came under the control of Hyder Ali and later Tipu Sultan of the Kingdom of Mysore, both of whom strengthened the region militarily and administratively. Following Tipu Sultan’s defeat in 1799 in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, the British gained influence in southern India and later established a cantonment in Bengaluru. For much of the nineteenth century, the city developed as two adjoining but distinct urban zones: the older “pettah” or native town and the British cantonment, each with different administrative systems, urban forms, and social composition.
This dual development had lasting effects. The cantonment drew Tamil, Telugu, Anglo-Indian, and other communities, while the older city remained deeply rooted in Kannada mercantile and local traditions. Rail links, military importance, and colonial administration helped the city grow. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Bengaluru also gained significance through public institutions, education, and industry.
In the princely state of Mysore, especially under progressive rulers and administrators, the city saw investments in public works, electricity, and industry. Bengaluru was an early beneficiary of hydroelectric power from the Shivanasamudra project, which supported lighting and industrial development. During the twentieth century, it became a center for public-sector enterprises, aviation, telecommunications, and scientific research. Institutions such as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bharat Electronics Limited, and the Indian Institute of Science gave the city a strong technical foundation.
After Indian independence in 1947, Bengaluru continued to expand as an administrative, educational, and industrial center. The integration of the old city and cantonment into a larger urban structure accelerated post-independence growth. From the 1980s onward, the city emerged as India’s most prominent software and technology hub, aided by engineering talent, English-language education, national research institutions, and economic liberalization in the 1990s.
The official English name of the city was changed from Bangalore to Bengaluru in the twenty-first century, reflecting the Kannada form of the name. In recent decades, the city’s history has been marked by dramatic migration, real estate expansion, infrastructure stress, water scarcity concerns, and a shift toward a globally connected service economy. Even so, older temples, markets, colonial-era buildings, and traditional neighborhoods continue to anchor the city’s historical identity.
