Bengaluru is located in the southeastern part of Karnataka on the Deccan Plateau in southern India. Its inland position means it is far from the coast, and its relatively high elevation gives it a cooler and less humid climate than many low-lying Indian metros. The city lies within the watershed region between river systems rather than directly on the bank of a major perennial river.
The terrain is characterized by an undulating plateau with gently rolling ground, low ridges, and shallow valleys. Historically, this landscape supported a network of man-made tanks and lakes built to capture rainwater. Many of these water bodies were important for irrigation, drinking water, and flood control, and they remain an essential part of Bengaluru’s geography even though many have been encroached upon or degraded over time.
The broader region around Bengaluru includes granite outcrops, red soils, and areas of scrub and dry deciduous vegetation. The city’s geology is associated with ancient peninsular gneiss and granitic formations common across the southern Indian shield. This hard-rock terrain influences groundwater storage, making water management more difficult than in riverine plains.
Bengaluru does not have mountains, deserts, or a coastline within the city, but it sits amid a plateau landscape that transitions toward agricultural districts and smaller rocky uplands in surrounding areas. Natural resources in the immediate urban area are limited; its development has depended more on human capital, institutional concentration, and connectivity than on extractive resources. Key environmental concerns include shrinking wetlands, air pollution, pressure on open land, and stress on urban biodiversity.
